Philippines AirAsia, Inc. launched on August 1, 2019 a direct link between Cebu and Kaohsiung in Taiwan.
The inaugural flight from Kaohsiung on August 1 was greeted by a water cannon salute at the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
This new direct link brings to 23 the international destinations that may be accessed through the MCIA.
The Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority said the airport is also connected to 28 domestic destinations.
These domestic and international destinations are served by 9 Philippines-based airlines and 17 foreign airlines, the MCIAA said.
In a Facebook post, the MCIAA said AirAsia will service the Cebu-Kaohsiung route thrice weekly every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday using an Airbus A320 aircraft with 180 all-economy seats.
“The Philippines continues to be one of the top holiday destinations for Taiwanese. As the only Philippine airline to connect Cebu and Clark directly to Kaohsiung, we are pleased to be able to contribute to Philippine tourism and bring Cebuanos and Kapampangans closer to southern Taiwan as well,” Philippines AirAsia president and CEO Dexter Comendador said in a statement.
Megawide Construction Corporation, which forms part of Mactan airport terminal operator GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC), earlier said passenger traffic at the MCIA reached 11.37 million in 2018.
This was about 18% higher than the 9.59 million passengers in 2017 and just a little over a million shy of the airport’s new capacity of 12.5 million.
Plans for a third passenger terminal building are already being made to accommodate the projected increase in passenger traffic volume.
As of April 2019, a total of 4.1 million domestic and international passengers passed through the airport.
Air traffic volume likewise increased by 15% with international traffic up by 19% and domestic traffic improving 14%. (Ventures Cebu)
