Travel and tourism industry decision-makers and other stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region will converge in Cebu in May for the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Annual Summit.
The conference, set for May 9 to 12, 2019, will be held mostly at Radisson Blu in the Cebu North Reclamation Area.
The organizers are in Cebu for an ocular inspection of the conference venues and sites that the delegates are expected to visit.
This year’s conference will carry the theme "Progress with a Purpose” and highlight the “fundamental challenges, issues and opportunities of the travel and tourism industry”.
Up for discussion are best practices, case studies, and stories about people making a change to improve their bottom line and bring about a better future.
In a briefer about the upcoming summit on its website, PATA noted the industry is grappling with “climate change, overcrowding at tourism sites” and other challenges.
Overcrowding has strained infrastructure and led to social and economic inequality in many destinations, the group noted.
To address these, the group said a “new type of leadership from truly progressive entities” is needed.
“This is critical as the world works towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations. These principles, including the Sustainable Development Goals are aligned to the mission of the PATA to act as a catalyst for the responsible development and management of travel and tourism in Asia Pacific,” it added.
One of the highlights of the summit is the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)/PATA Leaders Debate on May 11.
The debate will tackle the greatest challenge that the travel and tourism industry face at present. (Ventures Cebu)
