The Bantayan Airport project is about 50% complete, according to Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) general manager and CEO Steve Y. Dicdican.
Dicdican led an inspection team to assess the airport project, which is targeted for completion in December 2020.
Mary Ann M. Dimabayao, head of the MCIAA Public Affairs Office, said Dicdican and the inspection team will go back to the island for another assessment on the project on September 25 and October 2, 2020.
The project involves the extension of the runway to 1.2 kilometers from the previous 900 meters and the construction of a perimeter fence. The runway is 70% finished while the perimeter fence is 30% complete.
“Bantayan is indeed a beautiful place, so we have to make our airport beautiful as well," Dicdican said in a statement on September 12, 2020.
The MCIAA aims to transform the Bantayan Airport, which used to accommodate only charter flights, into a commercial airport.
MCIAA took over the facility in 2017. On September 30, 2019, Dicdican and Cebu Governor Gwendolyn F. Garcia signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on the 25-year development of the facility into a commercial airport.
MCIAA earlier said it was spending nearly P100 million for the airport’s rehabilitation — P3.8 million for the renovation of the terminal and communication buildings and other facilities, and P94.45 million for the construction of a concrete runway and perimeter fence. (Ventures Cebu)
