Tourist arrivals in Central Visayas region increased 16% to breach the 8-million mark in 2018, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said.
An infographic posted by the DOT Central Visayas regional office on its Facebook page showed that a total of 8,099,346 tourists visited the region in 2018.
These tourists spent a combined P44.2 billion, with foreign travelers posting an average daily expenditure of P6,597 each and domestic travelers, P1,200 each.
A total of 3.634 million foreign visitors arrived in the region, a 25% increase from the 2.881 million who visited in 2017.
Domestic tourists increased by almost 10% to 4.465 million in 2018 from 4.068 million in 2017.
South Korea remained the top source of arrivals, accounting for 1.344 million of the arrivals, followed by: China, 621,993; Japan, 464,564; United States, 232,288; and Taiwan, 84,750.
Central Visayas is composed of the provinces of the island-provinces of Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor, and the province of Negros Oriental on Negros Island.
The Mactan Cebu International Airport, the primary gateway into the region, is connected to 27 international destinations.
As of January 2019, the airport served a total of 590 international flights. Ten new direct links, including eight that connect Cebu to various cities in China, were launched in 2018.
There are a total of 882 DOT-accredited tourism establishments in the region as of end-November 2018. (Ventures Cebu)
