The Cebu Interim Bus Service (CIBUS) will start operations on March 16, 2020, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced.
This is a trunk service that will mimic the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and operate until the long delayed Cebu BRT project starts operations in December 2021.
This will also allow Cebuanos to readily adapt to a culture of predictability in their daily commute.
“After a long wait, the CIBUS will be operational. It will serve for the convenience of Cebu commuters until the Cebu BRT, which is designed to accommodate a larger passenger volume is established and is up and running,” DOTr Secretary Arthur P. Tugade said in a statement.
The CIBUS will provide a direct route from Fuente Osmeña to the South Road Properties, with 17 bus stops. Modern low floor/low entry, air-conditioned buses from Vallacar Transit, the company that operates Ceres buses, will be deployed, according to a newspaper report.
Boarding and alighting will be allowed at designated bus stops only and bus service frequency will be no more than 10 minutes apart during peak hours.
The BRT system is part of the Metro Cebu Integrated Intermodal Transport System (IITS) project.
Technical support consultant Egis is currently validating documents and Detailed Engineering Design (DED) of the P17-billion BRT project. Once finished, the BRT is envisioned to field 250 buses and have at least 21 stations.
Phase 1 (Cebu South Bus Terminal to Capitol) is targeted for partial operations by December 2021 and Phase 2 (Bulacao/Talisay to Talamban) partial operations will be in March 2022. (Ventures Cebu)
