Common tower program takes shape

A tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on June 17 among Globe Telecom and tower providers edotco Group Sdn. and ISOC Infrastructure Inc. to kick off the construction of 150 cellular tower sites for Globe.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said the signing of the agreement shows the initial results of the government’s common tower initiative.

“This feat shows that the common tower initiative is taking shape, and with the continued collaboration between the telco operators and the common tower provider pool, we are bound to experience improved telecommunication services in no time,” said DICT acting Secretary Eliseo Rio Jr., who witnessed the signing.

“We hope more signings will follow suit in the coming weeks as we embarked in this united push for aggressive tower rollout in line with our policy on passive infrastructure sharing,” Rio added.

Under the agreement, ISOC and edotco will build an initial 150 cellular tower sites for Globe.

Priority would be Region 4A, or CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces).

The DICT targets the rollout of at least 50,000 cellular towers across the country within the next 7 to 10 years.

A total of 23 tower providers have, so far, signed up for the program.

Currently, the Department is piloting the rules on the accelerated rollout of common towers, which earmarked 2,500 sites as locations for the common tower buildups. (Ventures Cebu)
