MerryMart Grocery Centers, Inc. and FoodPanda Philippines have signed an agreement to pioneer the “dark groceries” concept in the country.

Dark groceries are outlets that will solely cater to online deliveries of fast moving consumer items within their vicinity.

The stores are usually hidden. These aim to deliver online purchases within 15 minutes.

MerryMart chairman Edgar “Injap” Sia II said this is going to be a real game changer in the online grocery space.

“Imagine being able to buy exactly what you need, when you need it, and for it to arrive at your doorstep in a very short span of time,” he said in a statement on September 23, 2020.

“We are glad to join forces with the global delivery platform FoodPanda to power this ‘dark grocery’ store concept as they are the leaders in the online food delivery space,” he added.

The first dark groceries in the country will start operations in Makati and Manila cities in October 2020.

MerryMart, a unit of Injap Investments, Inc., has three grocery retail formats, namely, MerryMart Grocery, MerryMart Market and MerryMart Store.

The company aims to open 1,200 branches nationwide and generate systemwide sales amounting to P120 billion by 2030.

FoodPanda Philippines, which is operated by the Berlin-based Delivery Hero SE, has over 20,000 riders and operates in 71 cities across the country. (Ventures Cebu)
