The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is suspending inspections of establishments from December 15, 2018 to January 19, 2019.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III issued an administrative order directing all DOLE regional offices to suspend inspections in their areas of jurisdiction to prevent chances of bribing inspectors.
“It is our duty to ensure the continued effectiveness of DOLE’s enforcement of labor laws and standards and uphold the integrity of our labor inspection activities, specially this season with heightened chances of bribery and suspicions,” Bello said.
Exempted from the order are complaint inspections, technical safety inspections, and Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHS) investigations as well as urgent inspections of establishments directed by the Labor Secretary.
The administrative order says the period of suspension will be used for the disposition of all pending Labor Standards (LS) cases and preparation of the department’s labor laws compliance monitoring program next year.
As of September 2018, DOLE’s inspections as part of the campaign against illegal forms of contractualization have partly led to the regularization of 342,467 workers.
Of the number, 254,452 were voluntarily regularized by their employers while 88,015 workers were regularized through inspection. (Ventures Cebu)
