The Department of Transportation (DOTr) inaugurated on Saturday, January 5, 2019, the newly repaired port of Tubigon, a major link between Cebu and Bohol.
The port was among the facilities that sustained major damage from the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Bohol on October 15, 2013. The destructive quake, which also shook Cebu, killed 172 people, flattened two centuries-old churches and heavily damaged roads, bridges and other structures.
In a social media post, the DOTr said rehabilitation of the Tubigon Port was fast-tracked after Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade inspected the facility on March 26, 2018.
Tugade led the inauguration of the rehabilitated port on Saturday.
The DOTr said the Tubigon Port can now accommodate up to 28 ships and an average of 4,000 passengers daily. The port used to serve only 10 ships and an average of 1,500 passengers a day.
“It can now harbor larger vessels, as well, and has three RoRo (roll-on-roll-off) berths that can hold landing craft tanks (LCTs) and barges,” the agency said.
An air-conditioned passenger terminal building has a baggage X-ray machine and walk-through metal detector.
The Tubigon Port, which is nearest Cebu, is the primary dock for vessels plying the Cebu-Tubigon route, an alternative to the Cebu-Tagbilaran route. The Cebu-Tubigon fast ferry trip takes only about an hour while the Cebu-Tagbilaran trip takes about two hours.
Tubigon, situated along the west coast of Bohol, is a first-class municipality with a population of more than 45,000 people based on the 2015 census. (Ventures Cebu)
