Renovation of the Terminal 1 of the Mactan Cebu International Airport is on track for completion as targeted in the fourth quarter of 2019, the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) said.

Most of the temporary construction enclosure at the terminal was taken down by mid-August 2019.

The terminal, which used to cater to both domestic and international flights, now serves only the domestic passengers. The international flights are served at Terminal 2.

As planned, MCIAA Public Affairs Division Chief Mary Ann Monzon-Dimabayao said Terminal 1, or T1, is being transformed by concessionaire GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) into an Airport Village to complement the resort theme of Terminal 2.

The idea is for meters and greeters to enjoy a village-like atmosphere while waiting and for the airport to become the most passenger-friendly facility in the country.

Designed by Budji + Royal Design, the area for the meeters and greeters will feature restaurants such as Shakey’s.

“So far, there’s Shakey’s. There will be other restaurants soon,” Dimabayao said.

The Mactan Airport has continued to turn in significant revenues for infrastructure developer Megawide Construction Corporation, which holds 60% equity in GMCAC.

In the second quarter of 2019, Megawide said the MCIA contributed revenues of P904 million, bringing first-half revenues to P1.8 billion, 36% higher than the revenues logged in the same period last year.

The company said growth was driven largely by the 10% increase in total passenger volume at the MCIA to 6.4 million passengers from January to June 2019.

The domestic segment, which accounts for 67% of the total passenger mix, went up by 11%, while the international segment, which accounts for 33% of the passenger mix, grew 10%.

Air traffic volume also increased by 5%, with international traffic posting the higher growth rate of 11% and domestic traffic going up by 3%. (Ventures Cebu)
