More PeoplesJeep units to serve Metro Cebu

The Cebu People’s Multi-Purpose Cooperative (CPMPC) is launching Monday afternoon, March 16, 55 new PeoplesJeep modern jeepney units that will soon serve Metro Cebu.

Each modern Durabus Zhongtong Class 2 public utility vehicle is brand new. At present, 12 units are serving the Talamban to Colon area under Route No. 13C.

Each modern jeepney features a GPS, speed limiter, front and rear security cameras, and indoor TV for entertainment.

All the units have air-conditioning systems and foam seats for a comfortable ride. Payment of fare will be through the Beep card, which is operated by AF Payments Inc., an Ayala-led company that implements the automatic fare collection system under the PUV modernization program.

The launching and blessing ceremony for the 55 new units is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday at the open parking space in Blessed Sacrament Subdivision along Kagudoy Road in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan Island, Cebu.

“This is by far the biggest launching event of modern jeepneys as the country gears up for the full implementation of the PUV modernization program,” the cooperative, which has more than 70,000 members nationwide, said in a statement Monday.

The cooperative said each modern jeepney is powered by environmentally-compliant Euro 4/5 diesel engines, significantly reducing carbon and sulfur emissions.

“This is our response to the government’s call for a massive industry-wide transport modernization providing efficient, safe and comfortable public transportation to the riding public while at the same time promoting pro-environment initiatives for a cleaner and better tomorrow,” the cooperative said.
