Updated: Jun 15, 2023

The first batch of solar-powered jeepneys arrived Tuesday, February 5, in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan Island as part of the government’s public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program.

The new jeepneys will be operated and managed by the United Drivers and Operators Transport Cooperative and will serve the Lapu-Lapu City loop.

Star 8 Green Technology Corporation, which manufactured the solar-powered jeepneys, shipped out the first 25 units for Lapu-Lapu City on February 3.

Ten units have arrived while 15 more are expected Wednesday, February 6.

On its website, Star 8 said they expected to manufacture up to 100,000 solar jeepneys over the next three years to replace the aging combustion engine fleet. Each jeepney can seat 20 adult passengers, the company said.
