THE chairman and CEO of publicly listed energy company Vivant Corporation, Dennis N.A. Garcia, has died from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
The Cebu-based company disclosed this in a regulatory filing before the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday, March 30, 2020.
In a statement, Vivant said Garcia died at 6:38 p.m. of March 28, a few hours after his test results were released. He was found positive for the novel coronavirus, or SARS-CoV-2, the highly infectious pathogen that causes COVID-19.
Garcia had pre-existing emphysema. He was 70 years old. His remains were cremated at 10 a.m., March 29.
Vivant said it is working with the Cebu City Government in tracking Garcia’s movements in the two weeks prior to his hospitalization in order to identify the people he was in close contact with for monitoring, quarantine and possible testing.
Based on the Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas list, Garcia was patient CV25, the third mortality from COVID-19 in Cebu City and the 5th in Central Visayas region.
As of 5 p.m., March 30, the DOH said they have confirmed 30 COVID-19 cases in the region, with 5 deaths. One patient, PH03 on the national list, has recovered and returned to China. Twenty-four patients remain admitted in various hospitals in the region, mostly in Cebu City.
Vivant is majority owned by the Garcia-Escaño family of Cebu.
Among others, it holds equity in Cebu Private Power Corporation, owner and operator of a 70-megawatt (MW) diesel-fired power plant in Cebu; Delta P, Inc., owner and operator of a 16-MW diesel-fired power plant in Palawan; and Cebu Energy Development Corporation, which owns and operates a 246-MW coal-fired power plant in Toledo City, Cebu.
Garcia served as president of Visayan Electric Co., Inc. from 2004 to 2013. He later brought his decades of experience in the power distribution sector to Vivant.
"His cautious optimism was a steadying force for a new company born in a period when the power industry was facing rapid and unprecedented change, the captain guiding his ship through the storm to calm waters," the company said in a Facebook post. (Ventures Cebu)
